According to the FSM (EF&EC-29) the inputs for Valve Timing Control include:
- Air Flow Meter
- Crank Angle Sensor
- Engine Temperature Sensor
- Throttle Sensor
- Neutral switch / A/T control unit
Since I don't have the neutral switch hooked up and the A/T control unit is no longer in the car, I'm left wondering how that affects VTC operation (or in your case where the A/T control unit is present but the A/T itself is not). If the VTC's are working then all is well, but if not then clearly I need to take a closer look at it. I'll have an answer on Thursday or, if I have time, I'll hook up the laptop for a quick spin when I get home this evening.
